The robot attack the day before had taken up a good chunk of the night. Despite that Hugh still woke up early, at the same time he always did even if everyone else around him was still sleeping.

The only thing worthy of note about the morning was the mention that it was a certain Engineer's birthday in the notifications system. He stared at the message for a while and wondered if he should do anything about it. He was trying to show some good will towards the other man and he supposed it had been a while since he had baked anything. As it turned out the dry ingredients in the kitchen were everything he needed. There was a lack of tins but one cupboard contained paper cases. Why not, if anything else the rest of the base would probably appreciate them and most importantly they would not be pancakes.

Cupcakes did not take long to make and he had them done before anyone else was awake. Most of them were left on the kitchen counter, one was put on one of the many small bedside tables in the dorm, next to Orwell's bunk, a note tucked underneath it simply saying "there are more in the kitchen if you like."
