He had very nearly missed it.

The gleam of metal that didn't quite belong caught his attention from the corner of his eye as he passed by. The alarmed Sniper jumped and upon realising how stupid that would have looked once he actually saw what had spooked him he was glad that nobody was around to have seen it.

After a few minutes of staring he took the note and read it. His brows came together briefly before he folded the note up and slipped it into his pocket. After that it was the knife's turn to be picked up and inspected. The outside was well worn but the blade once persuaded to come out was, as far as he could tell, surprisingly sharp. As it turned out it was much easier to close the knife again than it was to open it. He ran a thumb over the worn metal as his other hand toyed with the chain it had come on. There was no real doubt as to where it had come from so now it was time to wonder why on earth he had been given it. Of all the people on the base that Sid could give a weapon to Hugh wouldn't have thought himself to be very high on the list. Considering recent events surely he would be at the bottom... for any kind of gift or well wishes.

The chain was hooked over his thumb and wrapped around his wrist a few times as he forced himself to start moving again.

He didn't get very far.

As soon as he was in front of Sid's door he stopped again. It was tempting to hang up the knife and leave it or knock and ask what on earth the Engineer was playing at but it had been a gift. A startlingly thoughtful one or so it seemed. He didn't really want to give it back nor did he want to talk to Sid but it didn't seem entirely right to just take it and go.

A few moments of hesitation later he headed into his room. The top drawer of his desk contained everything he needed. The note was taken out of his pocket and on the back of it he wrote 'Thank You' because those two words on their own probably wouldn't start a whole new fight and satisfied his need to say something about it without actually saying anything.

Once he was back out in the hall the note was stuck to Sid's door and he continued on his way. Hanging around longer would only be a good way to encounter the Engineer and that would only make a mess of things.
